The Grand Banks trawlers (GB) have
just turned 40 years old. In 1962 the company built their first 36
footer. Since then they have built hundreds of 32, 36, 42, 46, 49, 50,
57 and 62 foot trawlers and just recently added a new speedy Eastbay
line. In 1973 they switched from wooden hulls to fiberglass.
The first
GB were built in Kawloon, Hong Kong, but, before to long the yards were
too small and the company signed up with Singapore getting a 13 acre
site with a 1300 foot waterway. From then there was no stopping them in
making an outstanding boat. Most if not all of the 32' GB are single
screw boats 36' GB are either single or twin engines, to the best of my
knowledge all the bigger trawlers are powered by twin diesel engines.
My 1971 GB 42' is built of wood and is powered by twin 120 Ford Lehman
diesel engines. She cruises at 8 knots and burns roughly 6.6gph...she also weights in close to 23 tons.
